Zumthor Atmosphere

THE EXPERIENCE THROUGH THE TEXTS

In Atmospheres, a work written by Peter Zumthor, in this passage the author explains on this nine short chapters what really consists an atmosphere. Zumthor explains that atmospheres depend very much on how we feelings and how they react to our surroundings clearly, is completely influenced by the architecture of the place, and the feelings will not be the same in a hotel or a coffee shop as we weill feel in a in a house or a very rustic place. Regarding this topic are summarized in Zumthor’s concerns in creating a good atmosphere, with vibes that connect both in intensity and mood with the people. during this exert he gives us the answers in the skeleton of architecture, material compatibility, the sound of space, the temperature of a space, surrounding objects, between composure and seduction, tension between interior and exterior, levels of intimacy and the light on things, to be able to create ourselves a good atmosphere that reaches people. of the nine chapters, the third chapter, the sound of space, the fifth chapter, surrounding objects, and the ninth and last chapter, the lights of things, have particularly caught my attention. In material compatibility, Zumthor explains that materials are endless and when you put them together they react in unique ways. Just one material, such as a rock, has infinite ways of being, if you take small pieces of the rock, or a very large one, it is different because it becomes something totally different. I myself have thought about this many times and that is that when it comes to combining components, there are certain points where sometimes they are too similar to react together or, if not, too different. Chapter five talks about how the author relates certain furniture and it affect his style and the style of a house, the ideas overlap and thanks to previous references, he h related the furniture to the new house. Most often the student would not think like Zumthor, I feel i can relate to him and I liked his method and ideas, we are not sharing the same mind but we can exchange it. Last , I would like to talk about the ninth chapter, the lights of things, and as Zumthor explains, architects do not design something and then wonder where to put the lights, but they create it thinking about the lights. I am interest in that aspect because the he described how we should focused more on thinking how it should be instead only building for build. Zumthor explains that he imagines the whole building in darkness and that the light has to be filtered and illuminated. this makes me to have more interest on reading of him and his work.
